Data and app protection

Cloud Access Security Broker (CASB)

See every SaaS app in use and control what people can do in each one.

A Cloud Access Security Broker (CASB) gives you visibility and control over SaaS use. Nexapp CASB discovers shadow IT, controls SaaS use by user and activity, and connects to sanctioned apps through API connectors, under the same policy engine as SWG and DLP.

What it does

Teams sign up for SaaS apps with a card and a work email. Files end up in personal drives, and IT finds out after an audit. Even approved apps carry risk when anyone can share a folder publicly or download an entire customer list. A CASB closes these gaps. Inline, it identifies which cloud apps are in use and controls activities such as uploading, downloading and sharing, user by user. Through API connectors, it looks inside sanctioned apps at the data and sharing already there.

How it works in Nexapp

01

Shadow IT discovery

Nexapp classifies SaaS apps in branch and remote-user traffic, so you see which apps are in use and by whom.

02

Activity-level control

Allow an app but restrict specific actions, such as uploads or sharing, for chosen users or groups.

03

API connectors

Connectors to sanctioned SaaS apps give visibility into data and sharing inside the app, not only traffic to it.

04

One policy with DLP

CASB and DLP share one policy engine, so a single rule can say which data may go to which app.

Where teams use it

Shadow IT review

An insurer's IT team gets a list of unsanctioned file-sharing and collaboration apps and moves users to the approved ones.

Personal devices in stores

A retail chain lets store staff read work email on personal phones, but blocks attachment downloads to those devices.

Contractors and vendors

A manufacturer lets suppliers use a shared project workspace, but stops them exporting design files.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between inline and API CASB?

Inline CASB controls activity as it happens in the traffic path.

API CASB connects to the SaaS app directly to review data and sharing already stored there. Nexapp provides both.

Does CASB replace the SWG?

No. The SWG protects general web browsing.

CASB focuses on SaaS apps and what users do inside them. Both run under one policy engine in Nexapp SSE.

How does CASB help with DPDP?

Knowing where personal data is stored and shared in SaaS, and controlling it, supports your DPDP security-safeguard duties, which apply from about May 2027.
