Replace or augment MPLS with secure SD-WAN

Keep MPLS where it matters, add cheaper links everywhere else, and retire circuits branch by branch as the data proves it, on one encrypted SD-WAN overlay.

Key facts

Transports
MPLS, ILL, broadband, 4G LTE and 5G, in any mix, under one overlay
Failover
Sub-second, driven by SLA probes for loss, latency, jitter and MOS
Traffic steering
Application-aware (DPI): overlay, local internet breakout, gateway or drop
Security on the edge
IPS, gateway antivirus, web filtering, anti-spam, InstaShield IP reputation blocking
Encryption
IPsec IKEv2 with hybrid post-quantum key exchange (ML-KEM, FIPS 203)
Scale and track record
75,000+ devices deployed, 400+ enterprise and banking customers, in production since 2014

Your MPLS contract still has months to run, and your branches cannot stop. Indian enterprises rarely rip out MPLS in one move, and you should not have to. Large bank RFPs already describe SD-WAN as a transport-agnostic overlay across "MPLS, ILL, DIA, Broadband, LTE, VSAT". SD-WAN and non-SD-WAN sites work side by side during migration. Our SD-WAN is built for that hybrid reality.

  • Augment first. Add broadband or 4G/5G next to MPLS at each branch. The Nexapp Controller steers your critical applications (core banking, ERP, voice) over the best-performing path. It sends SaaS and internet traffic out locally.
  • Replace where the data says so. After a few billing cycles, you see per-link loss, latency and utilisation for every site. Downgrade or retire MPLS where dual internet links meet your SLA. Keep it at hubs, data centres or sites where the business case still holds.
  • Keep one policy. Whatever mix each site runs, your routing, security and QoS come from one console.

What does a branch cost per month in rupees?

It depends on your circuit mix, and we would rather show you than quote a generic percentage. Most SD-WAN cost comparisons online are priced in US dollars for US carriers, and they do not reflect Indian MPLS, ILL and 4G tariffs.

We build the comparison with your numbers. It covers your current MPLS rental per branch and the broadband and 4G/5G plans at each location. It adds edge and licence cost (or a per-site subscription under NaaS). It counts the operations effort you save through zero-touch provisioning.

Fibre cuts and the Indian last mile

Congestion, road works and fibre cuts are the everyday reality of your branch connectivity. SD-WAN handles them by design:

  • SLA tiers (Gold, Silver, Bronze) measure every link with ICMP, TCP and HTTP probes. They move traffic before your users notice, with sub-second failover.
  • Session modes let you choose the behaviour per application: auto, weighted, SLA-based, per-packet load sharing, or duplicate. Duplicate sends critical packets over two links at once, so a single link failure drops nothing.
  • 4G/5G as a real path. Instaroute routers with dual SIMs, or dual cellular modules, give each of your branches a wireless link that does not share a trench with its fibre.
  • QoS with five traffic classes keeps voice and transaction traffic ahead of bulk downloads.

How migration works

A phased plan keeps your branch operations running throughout.

  1. Assess. Inventory your sites, circuits, applications and routing. Agree target SLAs per site class.
  2. Design. Choose the fabric: hub-and-spoke, full-mesh ADVPN or site-to-site, built with a six-step wizard. Choose routing (BGP with route reflector, OSPF, IS-IS, static, VRF) and head-end placement. The Controller runs Nexapp-hosted in India or self-hosted in your own data centre, with controller HA and DC–DR replication.
  3. Pilot. Bring up the head-end and a first group of branches. SD-WAN and existing MPLS-only sites interoperate while you validate SLAs.
  4. Roll out. Ship pre-registered devices. With zero-touch provisioning and serial admission, your branch comes online when the device is powered on and connected. No engineer configures it on site.
  5. Optimise. Use 25+ reports to decide which circuits to downgrade or retire. Config snapshots, diff and rollback protect every change. Mass firmware upgrade keeps your estate current.

Security moves to the edge with the traffic

Local internet breakout only makes sense if every branch is protected. Your edge includes an NGFW security suite (IPS, gateway antivirus, web filtering, anti-spam and InstaShield IP). You also get TACACS+ and RADIUS for admin access, and device HA with VRRP. When you want cloud-delivered controls for users and SaaS, add Nexapp SSE (ZTNA, SWG, CASB, DLP, FWaaS) on the same platform. Start with one router. Grow to full SASE.

Quantum-safe tunnels at every site

Traffic you send over the internet today can be recorded and decrypted later, once quantum computers are capable. Every one of your SD-WAN tunnels uses hybrid classical plus ML-KEM key exchange (NIST FIPS 203) and ML-DSA authentication (FIPS 204). Your firmware and configuration are post-quantum signed. That protects against harvest-now, decrypt-later. Post-quantum mode is on by default.

Frequently asked questions

Should I replace MPLS or keep it?

Most Indian enterprises start by augmenting it.

Add broadband or 4G/5G next to MPLS, and let the Nexapp Controller steer applications by measured performance. Then retire circuits where dual internet links meet your SLA. Hubs and data centres often keep MPLS longer.

Is SD-WAN cheaper than MPLS in India?

Usually, once internet links carry most of your traffic.

The saving depends on the circuit mix and locations. We build an INR per-branch comparison from your current bills and available local links. We do not quote a generic percentage.

Can SD-WAN run on 4G and 5G?

Yes. Instaroute routers carry 4G LTE (Cat 4/6) or 5G SA/NSA links, with dual-SIM arbitration by signal, latency or data usage.

Cellular can be a backup or a primary path, steered by the same SLA policies as wired links.

What happens during a fibre cut?

SLA probes detect loss, latency or jitter and move your traffic to the next best link with sub-second failover.

For critical applications, duplicate mode sends each packet over two links, so a single failure drops nothing.

Can the controller run in our own data centre?

Yes. The Nexapp Controller can be self-hosted in your DC and DR, with controller HA and replication.

Or we host it for you in India.

How do you migrate without branch downtime?

SD-WAN and existing MPLS-only sites interoperate during migration, so branches move in planned waves.

Zero-touch provisioning brings a new device online without an engineer on site. Config snapshots let you roll back instantly.

Can we add SASE later without replacing hardware?

Yes. The same Controller, edge devices and NexappOS firmware extend to Nexapp SSE (ZTNA, SWG, CASB, DLP, FWaaS) when you choose to add it.
