Threat prevention

Malware prevention

Catch known malware at the gateway and test unknown files before anyone opens them.

Malware prevention stops malicious files before they reach users and devices. Nexapp combines gateway antivirus on the edge with sandboxing of unknown files in Nexapp SSE, so both known and new threats are checked under one policy.

What it does

Malware still arrives as an attachment, a download or a file shared from a cloud drive. Signature-based antivirus catches what is already known, but new variants appear every day, and a file nobody has seen before can pass straight through. Malware prevention uses two layers. Gateway antivirus blocks known malware in the traffic path. Unknown files go to a sandbox, where they are opened in isolation and watched for malicious behaviour before delivery. Together, the two layers cut the chance that a single click becomes an incident.

How it works in Nexapp

01

Gateway antivirus on the edge

Nexapp edges scan traffic for known malware as part of the Nexapp Controller security suite.

02

Sandbox for unknown files

Nexapp SSE detonates unknown files in isolation before they are delivered, so new threats are judged by what they do.

03

One policy for both layers

Scanning and sandboxing are set in the same policy engine as your web, SaaS and data rules.

04

Findings feed detection

Malware verdicts appear in reports and in XDR incidents, alongside network and endpoint events.

Where teams use it

Finance and accounts teams

Invoices and statements arriving as downloads are checked before accounts staff open them.

Store back offices

Store managers download price files and rosters every day, and gateway antivirus screens them at the store edge.

People working from home

Employees outside the office have unknown downloads sandboxed through Nexapp SSE, just as they would at their desk.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between antivirus and sandboxing?

Antivirus matches files against known malware.

A sandbox opens unknown files in isolation and watches what they do. Nexapp uses both.

Do we still need endpoint protection?

Yes. Network malware prevention stops threats in transit.

The Nexapp endpoint agent (EPP/EDR) protects the device itself, including files that arrive by other routes.

Does the edge also filter spam?

Yes. The Nexapp Controller security suite includes anti-spam alongside gateway antivirus, IPS, web filtering and InstaShield IP reputation blocking.
